Frontiers in Nuclear Theory Colloquium: "Ab-intio AI for the structure of matter"

Phiala Shanahan, MIT
Thursday, April 15, 2021 - 10:30am
Zoom (See Event Info)

With advances in theory and supercomputing, we are beginning to quantitatively understand nuclear structure and interactions directly from the fundamental quark and gluon degrees of freedom of the Standard Model. I will outline the current status and challenges in this arena and show how first-principles lattice field theory calculations impact studies from the physics of the electron-ion collider through to theory predictions of dark matter cross-sections at underground detectors. The rapid progress in this field has been possible because of new algorithms, but challenges still remain to achieve full systematic control. I will outline how the nascent field of ‘ab-initio AI’ has the potential to enable currently intractable calculations to reveal the physics of nuclei from the Standard Model.
