A particularly exciting direction within the emerging realm of `Quantum Materials' focuses on the emergence of novel electronic structure that emphasize gyrotropic effects. In this talk I will focus on the fundamentals of gyrotropy in quantum materials, emphasizing optical detection, manipulation and control of such effects. We consider both, time-reversal-symmetry breaking gyrotropic effects, as well as gyrotropy that originates from natural optical activity.
