Quantum simulations on digital quantum devices have the promise of offering the possibility for non perturbative calculations of both static and dynamic properties of strongly coupled Lattice Field Theories. In order to deliver on this promise, large scale digital quantum calculations need to be protected using Quantum Error Correction (QEC). In this talk I will give a brief introduction to the main ideas behind QEC and how it is possible to design QEC protocols specifically suited for the simulation of gauge theories on the lattice. These constructions highlight the deep connections between local gauge invariance and QEC codes based on the stabilizer formalism.
