The LIGO Observatories recently completed a several-year campaign of installation and commissioning of upgraded systems. At the very beginning of Advanced LIGO's first observing run, LIGO discovered the merger of 2 black holes, each roughly 30 solar masses. In this talk I will review some of the upgrades that facilitated the improvement in sensitivity which enabled the observation of GW150914, as well as ongoing work to improve the sensitivity of the LIGO interferometers for future observing runs.
