Remote Desktop

UW IT Launch Husky OnNet (Campus VPN that uses F5 BIG-IP Edge Client - See link for download/install instructions).   This is NOW the preferred method to connect to UW Campus Private network when you are OFF Campus.   To access machines/systems on the UW Private network you will first need to CONNECT to the UW NETWORK with VPN Software.

If you don’t already have the VPN Software you can download it here: http://itconnect.uw.edu/connect/uw-networks/about-husky-onnet/husky-onnet/ 

After installing the VPN Software, Start the BIG-IP Edge Client (VPN Software). 

Windows User - Accessing your Desktop from Outside the UW Campus

    START -> PROGRAMS -> BIG-IP_EDGE_CLIENT Click the CONNECT BUTTON

Click the Connect BUTTON
You should be prompted for UW NetID and password.

Enter your NetID and Password, then CLICK LOGIN

Once connected (5-10 seconds), the Program will then get minimized and put into your TASK TRAY (usually at the BOTTOM, RIGHT corner of your Screen near the clock).

At this point YOUR Machine at HOME is treated like it’s INSIDE the UW NETWORK here on Campus.

MAC User - Accessing your Desktop from Outside the UW Campus

Start BIG-IP Edge VPN Client  and connect to UW Network (see above). 

Then just create a NEW VNC Connection to your machine name using it's Fully Qualified DNS Name:   xxxxx.phys.washington.edu 

Then enter your credential for the machine you are connecting to.

Note:  When you are done working, be sure and Disconnect the VPN connection to the UW Network.  

Connecting from MAC to Windows
On your MAC machine:

- Download CoRD from http://cord.sourceforge.net/

Start BIG-IP Edge VPN Client  and connect to UW Network (see above). 

- Run the CoRD program. In the "Quick Connect" input field, enter your machine name using it's Fully Qualified DNS Name:   xxxxx.phys.washington.edu:3389 

You should now be able to login to your machine.

Note:  When you are done working, be sure and Disconnect the VPN connection to the UW Network.  

Accessing your Windows Desktop from Outside the UW Campus

These instructions are for Windows users at home wanting to connect to UW with the NEW Husky OnNet (VPN) software and then connect to their computer at work. 


Before Leaving work, jot down your computers Fully qualified DNS name:  _________________________   (EX:  xxx.phys.washington.edu or xxx.clients.uw.edu)   

Start BIG-IP Edge VPN Client  and connect to UW Network (see above). 

Start the Remote Desktop Connection 

   START > PROGRAMS > REMOTE DESKTOP CONNECTION

Enter the DNS Name of your ComputerName: ____________________________, then CLICK CONNECT.

You will then be prompted to login to your computer just like you do every morning at your desk.

Enter Your UW NetID and Password, and CLICK OK.

Note:  When you are done working, be sure and Disconnect the VPN connection to the UW Network.  To do this RIGHT-CLICK the F5 LOGO in your Task Tray, then DISCONNECT.
